The Software Report is pleased to announce its third annual list of the Top 100 Software Companies. This awards feature publication has become recognized as the leading source of information on the best companies in the software industry. Selection is based on a rigorous review of nomination feedback received, in addition to deep research into a company's ratings on Glassdoor, G2, Capterra, and other publicly available information. The Software Report takes a holistic view, encompassing product quality, organizational effectiveness, management caliber, and ESG involvement, among other criteria.

This year's awardees run the gamut from multinational giants with tens of thousands of employees founded as far back as the 1970s and 1980s, to well over a dozen companies that were founded within the last decade, some of which employ a few hundred. Regardless of their size or age, they are transforming the software industry in their respective categories while delivering incredible value to their customers. From cloud computing to data storage, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, and workflow management, these are the companies to watch.

The following awardees were selected based on a comprehensive evaluation process, with particular focus placed this year on their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) efforts. Numerous awardees received a significant number of nominations from a range of their various stakeholders. Please join us in recognizing and celebrating The Top 100 Software Companies of 2022.

As perhaps the world's most significant architect of information technology, multinational tech titan Microsoft continues to drive how we work, learn, play, and do business in the digital world. From its humble beginnings in 1975 to its current status as a household name, the company has shaped the software industry as we know it. It boasts more than 180,000 employees in its offices in dozens of countries around the world, and posted $168 billion in revenue in 2021.

There has been no shortage of records broken and distinctions earned by Microsoft and its remarkable team over its five-decade history. Over the last several years, the company has passed numerous milestones, such as its $1 trillion market cap in 2019 and $600 billion global brand value. Some of the most recent achievements by the Redmond-based innovator are its acquisitions of game company Activision Blizzard and speech recognition software maker Nuance Communications. Microsoft also continues to support digital education with its ongoing work to bring cutting-edge tech like Windows 11 SE to K–8 schools across the world.

2. AdobeCategory: PublishingLocation: San Jose, CA

As one of the top software providers in the world, tech giant Adobe serves millions of users across the globe. Since its start in 1982, the company has primarily been known for its multimedia and creativity software offerings. Its popular products include Photoshop, Acrobat Reader, and Creative Cloud.

As of 2022, Adobe has more than 26,000 employees worldwide, about 40% of whom work in San Jose, California, where the company maintains its headquarters. On top of that, Adobe has field offices in about 30 countries across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. It also has major development operations in India. A long-time publisher of traditional software packages, Adobe was instrumental in the creation of the desktop publishing industry. Since then, the company has found tremendous success by adapting to shifts in the market, leading the charge into the cloud and subscription-based business model. Propelled by these digital offerings, its revenue more than doubled between 2015 and 2019. More recently, Adobe achieved record quarterly revenue of $4.39 billion in the second quarter of its fiscal year 2022.

3. TwilioCategory: Cloud ManagementLocation: San Francisco, CA

Today's leading companies trust Twilio's customer engagement platform to drive real-time, personalized experiences with their customers. Communication channels like voice, text, chat, video, and email are virtualized through APIs that are simple enough for any developer to use, yet robust enough to power the world's most demanding applications. This ability to greatly enhance communication earned the company early support from the likes of Airbnb, Home Depot, Uber, and Walmart. Launched in 2008 by Jeff Lawson, Evan Cooke, and John Wolthuis, the San Francisco-based company now boasts more than 5,000 employees in 26 offices in 17 countries and counting.

In June 2016, after years of increased private funding, Twilio went public and started trading with a 92% increase on the first day. Since then, it has carried this momentum into 2022 and delivered another strong quarter to start the year, with first quarter revenue coming in at $875 million, representing 48% year-over-year growth. As of March 31, 2022, the platform has 268,000 active customer accounts, compared to 235,000 on March 31, 2021.

4. GenesysCategory: Customer ManagementLocation: Daly City, CA

Founded in 1990, Genesys is a private Silicon Valley-based software company that sells customer experience (CX) and call center technology to mid-sized and large businesses. Led by Chief Executive Officer Tony Bates, Genesys orchestrates more than 70 billion customer experiences for organizations in more than 100 countries. The company is driven by a workforce of more than 1,300 global professionals delivering innovative "Experience as a Service" solutions.

Genesys has grown over time through many acquisitions, including the 2021 purchase of the Bold360 suite of digital engagement software from LogMeIn. That same year, the company raised $580 million in funding, led by Salesforce Ventures, resulting in a valuation of $21 billion. The company holds empathy as one of its core business values, and plans to continue incorporating it into its digital transformation efforts.

5. NutanixCategory: Cloud ManagementLocation: San Jose, CA

Nutanix is one of the world's great cloud computing companies, and is recognized as one of the best in the field when it comes to cloud services and software-defined storage. Founded 13 years ago by Dheeraj Pandey, Mohit Aron, and Ajeet Singh, Nutanix has empowered clients to optimize the efficiency of their systems. It has met with striking success in this mission, pivoting last year from hardware to subscription software and earning $1.4 billion in revenue in the process.

Led by new President and Chief Executive Officer Rajiv Ramaswami, Nutanix employs a team of more than 6,000 software experts (or "Nutants," as they are affectionately known within the company). It has repeatedly been hailed as one of the best tech workplaces in the world by Fortune and The Washington Post, and was recently named a Gartner Peer Insights Customers’ Choice for hyperconverged infrastructure software and distributed files and object storage. Notable acquisitions in recent years have included Netsil, Minjar, and MainFrame2, enhancing the company's cloud monitoring and application delivering capabilities.

6. MathWorksCategory: Data Management & AnalyticsLocation: Natick, MA

Private mathematical computing software company MathWorks remains one of the top names in advanced computing and data analysis. The company has been behind some of the landmark evolutions in mathematical computing for decades, growing from MATLAB, a free software for academics created by Cleve Moler in the 1970s, into an eminently profitable software company with a team of more than 3,000 working in 16 countries and revenue approaching $1 billion.

From its campus in Natick, Massachusetts, MathWorks has become an industry leader in fostering new developments in deep learning, IoT, and AI, hosting an annual MATLAB EXPO online conference to feature new applications of its signature MATLAB and Simulink products. It is headed by its Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder Jack Little, who was responsible for early versions of MATLAB and who built the company into the powerhouse it is today.

7. QualtricsCategory: Customer ManagementLocation: Seattle, WA/Provo, UT

Experience management legend Qualtrics continues its twenty-year campaign of excellence for transparent, international enterprise acceleration. Among the 16,000 brands that have made use of the company's cutting-edge experience management platform are Ferrari, Coca-Cola, and Samsung. Since its founding in 2002, Qualtrics has grown to a massive enterprise, employing nearly 5,000 people in its dual headquarters in Provo and Seattle as well as in its numerous offices in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and Australia.

Qualtrics continues to make waves not only with its next-level customer experience management solutions, but also with its ongoing devotion to addressing major societal issues, most notably its groundbreaking "5 for the Fight" campaign to develop a cure for cancer. Among the company's investments in its future are enhanced cloud infrastructure capability in Japan and a new Community Pulse initiative, which aims at helping local governments engage with their constituents in a more empathetic way.

8. CventCategory: Event ManagementLocation: Tysons Corner, VA

Cvent was founded in 1999 just outside of Washington D.C. as a two-person start-up, and more than 22 years later, the company has grown to more than 4,500 employees around the world and is still led by its Founder and CEO, Reggie Aggarwal. In its early days, Cvent started out as an online event registration tool, helping to make corporate meeting planning easier for organizations who had long relied on manual processes to plan and manage their events. Today, Cvent's robust SaaS platform is used by tens of thousands of customers worldwide to plan, market, and execute engaging events of all sizes: virtual, in-person, and hybrid.

By powering almost any event an organization hosts or attends, Cvent offers a single source of truth for organizations to better understand and improve their event marketing, spend, attendee engagement, ROI, and more. Hotels and venues also use Cvent's solutions to connect and engage with more planners to drive their group and corporate travel business—creating a global marketplace where event professionals collaborate with venues to create engaging, impactful experiences.

Throughout the pandemic, Cvent delivered new, innovative solutions to the market to support the evolving needs of the marketplace, guided their customers through monumental change, and offered complimentary access to industry reports, best practice webinars, and their Cvent Academy (a comprehensive training and certification program) to help industry professionals and drive recovery.

9. SnowflakeCategory: Cloud ManagementLocation: Bozeman, MT

Developed in 2012 and officially launched in 2014, Snowflake is a cloud-based data platform provided as a SaaS solution with a completely new SQL query engine. Its innovative architecture was natively designed for the cloud, meaning it can't be run on-premises. To the user, Snowflake provides all of the functionality of an enterprise analytic database, along with many additional special features and unique capabilities. Initially built on top of Amazon Web Services (AWS), Snowflake is now available on Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.

The cloud database and management company has come a long way since its early days. In May 2019, Fran Slootman, the retired former CEO of ServiceNow, took the reins at Snowflake. That same year, the company was ranked first on the Forbes Cloud 100. In September 2020, Snowflake became a public company via an initial public offering (IPO) that raised $3.4 billion, one of the largest software IPOs in history. On May 26, 2021, the company announced that it would become headquarter-less, with a principal executive office located in Bozeman, Montana.

10. ZscalerCategory: CybersecurityLocation: San Jose, CA

Launched 15 years ago, Zscaler is a cloud security company that offers a platform for businesses to securely transform their networks and applications for a mobile and cloud first world. The San Jose, California-based company, which was founded by Jay Chaudhry and Kailash Kailash, is well known in the industry for its innovative tech and currently has more than 275 issued and pending patents. All of its services are 100% cloud-delivered, and the company's flagship services—Zscaler Internet Access and Zscaler Private Access—create fast, secure connections between users and applications, regardless of device, location, or network.

Used in more than 185 countries, the company operates the world's largest cloud security platform, protecting thousands of enterprises and government agencies from cyberattacks and data loss. In March 2018, the company raised $192 million after it began trading on the Nasdaq. The following year, Zscaler received the Stevie award as the Most Innovative Tech Company of the Year.

11. Pure StorageCategory: Data Management & AnalyticsLocation: Mountain View, CA

All-flash data storage hardware and software producer Pure Storage is a rising star in the field of data center-grade solid state storage services. The company's facilitation of the latest and most data-intensive business processes has made it a critical part of major organizations including Toyota Financial Services, Roblox, Domino's, and NASA. When clients such as ServiceNow reach the end of what their legacy storage strategies can manage, Pure Storage offers a way forward for further growth and expansion with new cloud infrastructure and business transformation solutions.

At the end of 2021, Pure Storage made waves with the launch of its new, higher capacity version of its crown jewel FlashArray, an enterprise-grade storage solution equally suited for cloud-native applications and the largest of databases. With a singular top-tier data layer for all of its 9,500 customers, the company is ranked in the top 1% of B2B companies.

12. UiPathCategory: Business ProcessesLocation: New York, NY

UiPath, which was founded by Romanian entrepreneurs Daniel Dines and Marius Tîrcă, is an elite class of B2B software that automates repetitive digital tasks normally performed by people. It serves banking, healthcare, financial services, and government entities. The technology combines emulating how humans read computer screens (AI computer vision) with APIs and gives users access to pre-built automation components that can be combined to automate routine processes.

UiPath was founded in 2005 and has since opened offices in London, Bangalore, Paris, Singapore, and Tokyo, among other locations. Having filed confidentially for an initial public offering in December 2020, UiPath became public on April 21, 2021 and raised $1.3 billion in one of the largest U.S. software IPOs in history. Previously, in 2020, UiPath was named the top tech company and #2 overall in the Financial Times FT1000 ranking of America's fastest-growing companies. That same year, the company was ranked #3 on the Forbes Cloud 100 list for the second consecutive year.

13. GitHubCategory: IT ManagementLocation: San Francisco, CA

GitHub, a Microsoft subsidiary, is a provider of Internet hosting for software development and version control using the open-source Git platform. Founded in 2008 by a group of software developers and entrepreneurs, GitHub enables millions of developers and companies to build, ship, and maintain their software on the largest and most advanced development platform in the world. The company supports more than 83 million developers and four million organizations, including 90% of the Fortune 500 list.

GitHub began as a bootstrapped business and in 2018 was acquired by Microsoft for $7.5 billion. In 2022, the platform launched its Copilot AI tool, which assists developers inside their code editor with suggestions and recommendations. The utility is free for students learning to write code and is generally available to all developers.

14. MongoDBCategory: Data Management & AnalyticsLocation: New York, NY

In the modern data-driven landscape, an innovative developer database platform is an essential tool, and that's exactly what MongoDB continues to deliver. Working with clients in financial services, telecom, healthcare, and other critical industries, its major offerings Atlas, Enterprise Advanced, and Community Edition empower organizations around the world to harness the transformative power of data. First launched in 2007 in collaboration with internet advertising company DoubleClick, MongoDB makes use of the latest technology to help clients tackle their most complex challenges.

MongoDB has quickly grown into a prominent landmark in the online working world. The company boasts a team of more than 4,000 software and data specialists in offices in 29 countries, all supporting a database platform that has been downloaded more than 265 million times by users in 100 countries around the world. It is also renowned for its community outreach and social responsibility efforts, partnering with philanthropists Bright Funds to devote funds to causes that are important to its employees.

15. DropboxCategory: Data Management & AnalyticsLocation: San Francisco, CA

Since 2008, cloud storage and management company Dropbox has set the standard for cloud-based storage and collaboration with its file hosting platform and service. Headquartered in San Francisco, Dropbox was founded by Chief Executive Officer Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowski with the aim of creating a simpler productivity tool to help enterprises and individuals stay organized. With more than 700 million registered users across 180 countries, the company boasts a market cap in excess of $8 billion.

Driven by a workforce of more than 2,500 professionals, Dropbox has successfully shifted to a remote-first workplace in the wake of the pandemic. The company has also received countless awards and accolades, including landing on Fast Company's 2022 "Top 10 Most Innovative Companies" list.

16.DatabricksCategory: Data Management & AnalyticsLocation: San Francisco, CA

Founded in 2013 as a UC Berkeley lab project by the originators of Apache Spark, and now boasting a roughly 3,000-strong employee base, Databricks is an open-source distributed computing framework that provides clients with automated cluster management. The company has earned a reputation through its Delta Engine, a data lake analytics tool purported to be up to eight times faster than Apache Spark. It also has operations in Canada, the U.K., the Netherlands, Singapore, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, China, India, and Brazil. In 2018, when the company made public its log management product, it became a pioneer in combining the "three pillars of observability" to enable digital transformation and cloud migration.

In a collaboration with Google Cloud, the company provided integration with the Google Kubernetes Engine and Google's BigQuery platform at the outset of 2021. In August of that year, the company also wrapped up an eighth round of funding totaling $1.6 billion, making for an updated valuation of $38 billion. Two months later, it made its second acquisition with German no-code company 8080 Labs for its data exploration tool bamboolib.

Features include customizable dashboards with real-time interactivity, in-app communication tools, and a targeted alert system that acts before serious issues occur anywhere within the full stack. Data analytics is an additional key area of coverage for Datadog, which has enabled advanced, easily understandable visual graphics for metric, log, and APM data. Its Network Performance Monitoring provides visibility into network flows across environments, providing instant information about performance and dependency.

The company has amassed a customer base of more than 150,000, including major tech companies like Spotify and Facebook, which utilize Datadog's services to monitor both cloud-based and physical servers. Its employee count has also surged; at the end of last year, around 3,200 "Datadogs" were on the payroll. In just two years, the company's enterprise value has soared from $2 billion to north of $10 billion. Cisco offered to buy out Datadog for $7 billion right before its 2019 IPO, an offer the company rejected.

19. SlackCategory: Collaboration and DevelopmentLocation: San Francisco, CA

Slack Technologies is the institution behind its self-titled application, the collaboration hub relied upon by hundreds of thousands of customers around the world. Prominent brands including Target, Netflix, and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs make use of Slack to keep their workforce connected and innovating at the speed of the modern workplace. The company started its remarkable story as a startup called Tiny Speck, launched by Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield. A series of fundraises and business model pivots led to an eventual IPO in 2019, culminating in a 2021 acquisition by Salesforce for $28 billion.

Slack maintains its ever-popular application from its headquarters in San Francisco as well as international offices in Dublin, London, New York, Vancouver, and other major world capitals. The company has recently announced plans to build its digital-first collaboration ecosystem into new industries, such as its new extra-secure digital HQ for government work, GovSlack.

20. DynatraceCategory: IT ManagementLocation: Waltham, MA

Based in Waltham, Massachusetts, Dynatrace is a global software development company that provides a software intelligence platform based on AI and automation. The Dynatrace Software Intelligence Platform uses its proprietary AI engine, named Davis, to monitor and optimize application performance, development and security, IT infrastructure, and user experience for businesses and government agencies throughout the world. The company was founded in 2005 by its current Senior Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer Bernd Greifeneder—a serial entrepreneur and named inventor on 20 Dynatrace patents.

As a publicly-traded company, Dynatrace boasts a market cap of nearly $12 billion and revenue in excess of $929 million. The company is driven by more than 3,600 employees across North America, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. In 2022, it was recognized by Comparably with three awards: Best Places to Work in Boston, Best Global Culture, and Best Company Outlook.

21. ToastCategory: Business ProcessesLocation: Boston, MA

The original idea for Toast came from a group of friends who were frustrated with how long it can take to pay for one's check at a restaurant or bar. To solve this problem, the company founders—Steve Fredette, Aman Narang, and Jonathan Grimm—created a smartphone app that gives customers a way to start a tab at the restaurant and link a credit card. Launched in 2012, Toast now allows for mobile payments, customer loyalty programs, promotions, and social aspects, which are all integrated with restaurants’ existing POS systems. Today, the cloud-based restaurant management platform is used in approximately 62,000 restaurants, from small cafes to nationwide enterprises.

Always looking ahead, Toast's most recent updates include server-started ordering and a customizable digital menu by service area. In September 2021, after several rounds of funding and a nearly $5 billion valuation, the company went public. At the time, its market capitalization was roughly $20 billion, making it one of 2021's largest U.S. IPOs. Adding to this success, in 2022 Toast opened a new office in Dublin, Ireland and announced that it had acquired Sling, a communication and management solution.

22. BoxCategory: Business ProcessesLocation: Redwood City, CA

Box, which develops and markets cloud-based content management, collaboration, and file sharing tools for businesses, was founded in 2005 by Aaron Levie and Dylan Smith. Its initial focus was on consumers, but it pivoted to a business user focus around a decade ago. The company developed features to embed Box in common business applications or use APIs to integrate with them. In 2011, a reworked version of the Box service was introduced with technical improvements meant to help handle large numbers of business users. It also featured changes to the user interface and additional collaboration features. The company began developing industry-specific features for heavily regulated industries in 2012, when it introduced now-popular tools for HIPAA compliance at healthcare organizations.

With around 2,200 employees and approximately 41 million users, constituting 6.5% of the market for software that helps manage, share, and collaborate on digital files, Box's market success has led to an international expansion that has seen the opening of offices in London, Berlin, Tokyo, and multiple other locations. A few years ago, the company bought out search engine company Butter.ai and followed it up with the acquisition of e-signature startup SignRequest. Amid the pandemic, it made public an improved integration with videoconferencing software and a new feature dubbed Collections, which gives user customization power over their personal folder structure in the interest of bolstering remote work convenience.

23. ProcoreCategory: Business ProcessesLocation: Carpinteria, CA

Procore Technologies Inc. is a leading global provider of construction management software. In 2002, founder and CEO Craig "Tooey" Courtemanche created Procore with a mission to connect everyone in construction on a global platform and a vision to improve their lives.

Procore's platform connects key project stakeholders to solutions Procore has built specifically for the construction industry—for the owner, the general contractor, and the specialty contractor. Because of its unlimited user and support model, Procore is able to connect everyone on one platform and offer unlimited storage, open APIs, and a single source of accurate and timely data. With more than 11,000 customers and 1.6 million annual users in 125+ countries, the company helps the construction industry build smarter—reducing risk, increasing efficiency, better communication, more profits, and intelligent insights that allow customers to run better businesses.

More than one million projects and $1 trillion in construction volume have run on Procore's platform. Its App Marketplace has a multitude of partner solutions that integrate seamlessly with Procore's platform, giving construction professionals the freedom to connect with what works best for them. Headquartered in Carpinteria, California, Procore has offices around the globe.

24. SmartsheetCategory: Collaboration and DevelopmentLocation: Bellevue, WA

Smartsheet, with its legendary modern work management platform of the same name, is a publicly-traded software development company based in Bellevue, Washington. Established in 2005, the company quickly transformed a tiny team into a 3,000-strong workforce working to transform how organizations of all sizes scale and automate their business. Its platform is used by 90% of Fortune 500 companies to implement and manage their processes according to the demands of the modern working world.

This year, Smartsheet has demonstrated a stunning 43% year-over-year growth, and with Chief Executive Officer Mark Mader identifying a major portion of its business coming from overseas, it seems further international expansion is in the works. The company is a fixture on lists of the best places to work, and in 2021 it was named Comparably's best company for women, best company in Seattle, and best company for work–life balance.

25. Coupa SoftwareCategory: Finance & AccountingLocation: San Mateo, CA

Founded by Dave Stephens and Noah Eisner in 2006, Coupa assists companies in tracking and maintaining appropriate control over the resources and capital they spend. Its wide-ranging SaaS products help manage purchases, invoices, and expenses, providing executive dashboards, expense management, and alerts in a comprehensive suite. Coupa, which now has a staff of more than 3,000, was built using Amazon Web Services and is based on the Ruby on Rails (RoR) platform.

The company made headlines for inking deals with big-name customers, namely the United States House of Representatives and Walmart. With its acquisition of LLamasoft in 2020, the company added AI-powered supply chain design to its platform. In 2021, the company also brought configurations to its BSM platform, embedding ESG in an effort to optimize supply chains and reduce overall CO2 emission. In 2021, it introduced Coupa Ventures, its new venture capital fund. It also launched its Sustainable Business Spend Management platform to help business owners with their sustainability initiatives.
